The Nebraska Ethanol Board helps fuel retailers offer higher blends of ethanol. Currently, there are more than 125 Nebraska retailers offering E15 and 132 offering E85. Nationwide, E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) is available at nearly every fueling station. There are more than 4,200 public stations in 44 states offering E85 (or flex fuel)—a gasoline-ethanol blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on geography and season. As of 2022, E15 was sold at more than 2,500 stations in 31 states. Some stations offer multiple ethanol blends at one location, often through blender pumps.
Why Make the Shift to Higher Ethanol Blends?
Tax Benefits: Through the passage of LB1261 in January 2022, retailers who sell higher ethanol blends of fuel are able to apply for tax credits. The Nebraska Department of Revenue is administering the program. Get started here.
Consumer Appeal: Provide your patrons with cleaner and more affordable options. E15, a blend of 15% ethanol and gasoline, is approved for vehicles model year 2001 and newer, which is about 96% of the cars on the road today.
Rural Economy Support: Ethanol supports our farmers and contributes to value-added agriculture across the state.
Cleaner Air: Ethanol significantly reduces emissions from traffic pollution, contributing to a healthier planet.
Legislative Advantages: Recent legislation like the 2023 E15 Access Standard Act opens doors to increased consumer access to E15. This means a potential for higher biofuel sales at your facility while minimizing your costs and maximizing consumer savings.
If the statewide ethanol blend rate (the average percentage of ethanol in each gallon of fuel) is below 14% in 2027, the bill requires fuel retailers to offer E15 from at least one dispenser at each retail location. The bill also provides for an increased income tax credit for fuel retailers offering higher blends of ethanol: $0.08 per gallon of E15 sold in 2024, $0.09 per gallon in 2025, $0.08 per gallon in 2026, $0.07 per gallon in 2027, and $0.05 per gallon in 2028.
