Retail Benefits of Selling Ethanol

Welcome gas station owners and fuel retailers ready to embrace the future of sustainable fuels! This page is designed exclusively for you—the trailblazers shaping the landscape of greener transportation. Currently, there are more than 125 Nebraska retailers offering E15 and 132 offering E85, and that number continues to grow.

Why Make the Shift to Higher Ethanol Blends?

Tax Credits: Earn significant tax credits by offering higher ethanol blends at your pumps. It's not just good for the environment; it's great for your bottom line.
Consumer Appeal: Provide your patrons with more choices—healthier and more affordable options that align with their environmental values. E15, a blend of 15% ethanol and gasoline, is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for vehicles model year 2001 and newer, which is equal to about 2/3 of the U.S. fleet. By selling a 10% blend at the pump, fuel retailers are already helping Nebraskans save at least $275 million per year. That savings increases when higher blends are figured in.
Rural Economic Boost: Join hands in bolstering rural economies by supporting farmers and contributing to value-added agriculture.
Global Health Impact: Position yourself as a leader in the movement towards cleaner transportation. Ethanol significantly reduces greenhouse gases from traffic pollution, contributing to a healthier planet.

Legislation That Empowers Your Business

Recent legislative initiatives, such as the E15 Access Standard Act passed in May 2023, open doors to increased consumer access to E15. This means a potential for higher biofuel sales at your facility. The framework created through LB562 offers a pathway to enhance access to higher blends while minimizing costs to you and maximizing savings for consumers.

If the statewide ethanol blend rate (the average percentage of ethanol in each gallon of fuel) is below 14% in 2027, the bill requires fuel retailers to offer E15 from at least one dispenser at each retail location. The bill also provides for an increased income tax credit for fuel retailers offering higher blends of ethanol: $0.08 per gallon of E15 sold in 2024, $0.09 per gallon in 2025, $0.08 per gallon in 2026, $0.07 per gallon in 2027, and $0.05 per gallon in 2028.

Through the passage of LB1261 in January 2022, retailers who sell higher ethanol blends of fuel are able to apply for tax credits. The Nebraska Department of Revenue is administering the program. Get started here

The Ethanol and Biodiesel Tax Exemption allows for motor fuels sold to an ethanol or biodiesel production facility and motor fuels manufactured at and sold from an ethanol or biodiesel facility are exempt from certain motor fuel tax laws enforced by the Motor Fuels Division of the Nebraska Department of Revenue.

Ready to be part of the future of fuel?

The Nebraska Ethanol Board strives to be a resource for fuel retailers to make the process of installing, purchasing, and selling ethanol simple. Nine out of 10 fuel retailers in Nebraska will be able to offer E15 without expensive upgrades to their fuel infrastructure and dispensing system. Explore the benefits, check your infrastructure compatibility, and contact the Nebraska Ethanol Board to discover how you can benefit from Nebraska's ethanol movement.
